Empty praise is harmful. It sows seeds of doubt in the recipient and undermines the credibility of the person delivering it. Everyone knows when they are praiseworthy; some just have a harder time than others accepting it. But how do we give meaningful praise on a frequent basis if we’re not manufacturing it? Here are some tips to help you:

  1. Posting production metrics such as, “Completes per Hour per Person and Team” are an automatic form of public recognition for achievers.
  2. An absence of quality assurance issues is a sign that someone is growing. Speaking with the person at their workstation will make them feel seen and inspire them to keep up the effort.
  3. Finishing assigned orders early or on time is cause for celebration.
  4. Distribute frequent, achievable goals to different workers throughout the day or week and recognize those who meet them with verbal praise.

If you have a big goal like onboarding a new customer successfully; make sure to set clear expectations and communicate where the finish line is in advance. When your team crosses it, then celebrate it with a meal and be sure to toast the successful efforts of everyone while recognizing the extraordinary efforts of the few standouts.
